Our transat from the Mediterranean sea to Martinique on a BALI 4.2
In September 2023, we stepped aboard Sawubona, a BALI 4.2 for an Atlantic crossing from the Mediterranean to Martinique. There were 5 of us on board, ready to manoeuvre under the orders of our captain, Steve.

Some of the highlights from our adventure at sea:
- Night watches: magical, each of us taking our turn, comfortably seated on the flybridge. Our eyes riveted on the horizon, the sails or the stars, sometimes stretched out on the cushions in calm weather or sitting at the helm, ready to react if the wind was stronger - Great meals: what a luxury to be able to cook just like at home, but with a sea view! A huge work surface, an Americanstyle fridge/freezer and large cupboards allowed us a considerable stock of food. We wanted for nothing and were able to make pancakes and eat meat or fish right up to the last day.
- Fishing: very productive. The lines went in the water from the first light of dawn, ensuring that we had fish for lunch almost every day: 17 bream, 2 tuna and almost a marlin... almost... our mouths were watering. Some of us learnt how to fillet, others how to create new recipes, and we all enjoyed the process.
- Naps and quiet times, a moment of happiness on a Bali. The amount of space on the boat allowed us to have some quiet time. One of us would be reading a book on the sofa, while another was doing a crossword puzzle on the bow, and a third relaxing in his cabin, with the other two keeping watch over the course and the sails from up on the flybridge.
But above all, this crossing gave us the opportunity to share some really good times around the big table or on the cushions on the flybridge, recounting tales to each other about our lives or observing the sea in search of creatures. We were lucky enough to see lots of dolphins, a few pilot whales, some turtles and even a whale.
The 5 of us spent 40 days aboard the boat, in unrivalled comfort, sharing an adventure we’ll never forget. We can’t wait for the next one, when we’ll be able to relive these timeless moments to the rhythm of the waves and the wind.
